Certified Nursing Assistant
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's) provide basic care of patients in nursing homes under the direction of the nursing staff. In Erie County, CNA’s are one the most demanded positions in the labor force.
Our CNA program provides students with the required education and clinical training to achieve New York State Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Our program provides students with theory instruction and clinical practicum required by the New York State Department of Health to be certified as a nurse aide. Theory instruction includes topics such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition and proper hygiene. Students are required to complete clinical instruction to learn proper health care procedures and skills.
Upon completion of the program, students will take the New York State Nursing Home Aide Competency Examination. The exam includes two tests to evaluate the knowledge and skills required to provide safe and competent care.
Program Cost: $800 plus $30 book fee. (Students may be eligible for financial assistance). Student must pay book fee regardless of financial assistance. Program cost includes uniform, including one set of scrubs, white shoes, and a watch with a second hand and the New York State Nurse Aide Competency Exam fee.
Class Hours: TUESDAY, THURSDAY & SATURDAY
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.*
*Days and hours are subject to change.
Day classes are offered at least four (4) times a year.
Evening classes are offered depending on interest.
Requirements: Students must:
- attend an Orientation at the Adult Learning Center
- score at least an 9.0 READING level on a D LEVEL TABE test
- attend an individual interview with the Nursing Department Staff and meet the criteria as determined by the Nursing Department Staff
- pass a drug test to be administered at a time chosen by the Nursing Department Staff
- provide evidence of good health, immunization records, and tuberculin test results and have had a physical within the past year
- NOT have artificial nails of any sort
- pass a background check given by nursing home hosting the program
- write a 100- word essay answering the question, “Why do I want to be a Certified Nursing Assistant?” at the interview
- have a valid social security number, immigration documents and if applicable, possess current authorization to work within the United States
