ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) 

Buffalo Schools Adult Education Division offers over 50 ESL classes for non-native speakers who need to develop better skills in English. Classes run five days a week and are free of charge at 10 different locations throughout the city of Buffalo. We offer English language instruction for all levels of competency, from the low beginning level to advanced academic English.

 

Each class highlights speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English, with a concentration on vocabulary-building, conversation practice and grammar. Adults 21 and older can start anytime during the year.

DISTANCE EDUCATION

English language learners have the option of studying from home (remotely) by doing homework packets mailed to their home and engaging in online classes to support learning. Online class times vary to meet the needs of the individual student. All levels of English instruction are available.

TASC PREPARATION FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS  

English language learners wanting to obtain their High School Equivalency diploma are offered this class five days a week to work on mastering the test while developing their English skills.

It focuses on skills specific to the TASC exam as well as general English academic skills applicable to all higher-education, such as reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, writing mechanics, and essay composition.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

College Level English for Speakers of Other Languages

This evening class is specially designed to help advanced level non-native English speakers prepare for college level academic English. Students interested in preparing for college entrance exams, such as TOEFL and the Accuplacer, will work towards developing a high level of proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing for academic settings.

 

Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30-8:30 pm at the Workplace Literacy Center

 

 

ESL YOUTH CLASSES  

Buffalo Schools Adult Education Division also offers free ESL classes for English language learners 17-20 years old, looking for an alternative to traditional high school. Classes are divided into two levels (beginner-intermediate and advanced) and focus on HSE (high school equivalency) skills, incorporating TASC/Common Core content related to social studies, science, English, and math. Bus passes and free lunch provided.
