BARBERING

Buffalo School of Barbering focuses on head and facial hair treatment for males.  Buffalo School of Barbering requires that each Barber student receive a minimum of 600 hours, including 560 hours instruction and 40-hour unpaid internship.  Students gain professional skills serving clients in the onsite Barbershop Clinic.

The extensive history of Barbering allows students to pursue a variety of classical and contemporary techniques and styles.  From straight razors to electric clippers, our classes cover all the necessary tools.  Instruction includes both theory and practical experience.  Peer mentoring creates a learning environment geared to individual success.  Job placement assistance is available along with networking opportunities at events and expos.

Our policy for entering the program:

  1. Everyone must attend Open House.  Open House occurs at least one per week if not twice.

  2. Open House program includes program information, including costs and financial assistance and applicants will take an assessment of reading and math (TABE).

Barbering Program Qualifications

  1. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.  (Students 17 years of age qualify with High School Diploma).

  2. Applicants must hold a U.S. or U.S. recognized High School, Equivalency or TASC (formerly GED) diploma. 

  3. International applicants who possess a secondary credential must have foreign credential evaluated by an accredited transcript evaluation service or enroll in Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division HSE program.  Visit www.naces.org for more information on evaluation.

  4. Applicants must take TABE assessment, and if qualified, attend Registration and Orientation to enroll.

  5. TABE assessment score requirements for Barbering program:  9th grade Reading on a D Level TABE and 5.0 Total Math on a D Level TABE.  Free literacy and math classes are available for applicants who need academic assistance.

Barbering Program Breakdown:

  1. Program is 600 hours:  560 instruction plus 40-hour unpaid internship.  An additional 10% (60-hour attendance buffer is added to student calendar.

  2. Typically, new students enroll the first Monday of the month.

  3. Enrollment may be alternated monthly depending on enrollment and is subject to change.

  4. Full-time class meets Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Full-time program length is about seven (7) months.

  5. Part-time class meets Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.  Part-time program length is about one (1) year.

Cost of Program:

Program costs are currently based on student and community needs.  Currently, Buffalo School of Cosmetology does not offer Federal Student Aid but has established for a limited time only, an in-house tuition assistance program.  Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division offers barbering on a sliding scale based on applicant’s income and the Division’s eligibility of grant funding.  Program costs are subject to change as needed. 

Barbering - $4,500 (600 hour program) new tuition effective 7.1.18

  • A non-refundable down payment of $100 is due prior to the start of the program to hold enrollment.  Money order, bank or cashier's check or credit/debit card payment only for $100 down payment.  Personal checks are not accepted.

  • Prior to enrollment a $307.22 payment to Burmax is due for student barber kit.  Payment to Burmax must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check (may take longer to process) or credit/debit card.  Barber kits arrive within 7 to 10 business days from payment.  Personal checks are not accepted.  Barber kits are non-refundable.

  • Prior to enrollment a $149.32 payment to Burmax is due for student textbook.  Payment to Burmax must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check (may take longer to process) or credit/debit card.  Barbering book will arrive within 7 to 10 business days from payment.  Personal checks are not accepted.  Textbooks are non-refundable.

  • Tuition does not include state mandated physical or state licensing and testing fees.  The money order to cover state licensing and testing fees, if provided, is fully refundable upon termination.

  • Buffalo School of Barbering will provide a tuition schedule to assist students in making monthly payments in a timely manner.  Monthly payments are due by the end of the third week of the month or student will be removed from the roster.  Monthly payments must be in the form of money order, bank or cashier’s check or credit card.  Personal checks are not accepted.

  • Tuition includes student textbook, barber kit, manikin, and smock or barber jacket.  Kit, textbook, manikin and uniform, upon payment of $556.54 ($100 + $307.22 kit + 149.32 textbook) down payment, are non-refundable/non-returnable.

  • Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division does not have additional or hidden fees to programs.

Academic and Program Requirements

Eligibility for graduation requires that students meet the following criteria:

  1. Completion of all 600 program hours and assignments, including term papers, study guides, projects, and exams and quizzes.

  2. Maintain satisfactory academic progress (75% or higher GPA).

  3. Maintain satisfactory attendance as outlined under the attendance policy (90% or higher).

  4. Successfully complete hands-on practical experiences, internships, or alternative work experiences.

  5. Satisfy all financial obligations to BPS Adult Education Division.

Information Technology Requirement

  1. All students have access to division computers to complete coursework, resumes and cover letters, career exploration and as needed for program and career requirements.

  2. Computers must be used in accordance with Buffalo Board of Education IT guidelines.

  3. There are no additional fees for use of the Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division’s information technology.

Refund Policy:

Tuition refunds will be made only under the following circumstances and with proof of payment:

  1. BPS Adult Education Division reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment.  If tuition and fees are collected in advance to the start date of the program and BPS Adult Education cancels the class, 100% of tuition and fees will be refunded.

  2. Appropriate refunds for a student who does not begin classes shall be made within 45 days of the class start date.

  3. A full refund will be made for withdrawal of those not satisfied only prior to the second week of classes.

  4. A prorated refund will be given the second week of classes through mid-point.

  5. Midpoint to end of program will receive no refund.

  6. Upon termination of enrollment, any balance due to BPS Adult Education Division, based on the school's refund policy, is payable immediately.  All charges on the student's account must be paid in full prior to the completion of the training program.

  7. BPS Adult Education Division will not reimburse students for a refund under $5.00 or less.

 

Outstanding Balances

Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division reserves the right to withhold student transcripts and deny approval for State Board Examinations to any student who has an outstanding tuition balance within their program.

Barbering Transfer Policy:

​Buffalo School of Barbering does not accept hours from other barbering programs.
