COSMETOLOGY


Buffalo School of Cosmetology requires each Cosmetology student receive a minimum of 1040 clock hours of instruction, including 1000 hours of theory and practical experience and 40-hour unpaid internship. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the New York Appearance Enhancement - Cosmetology Written and Practical exams.
Instruction includes both theory and practical experience. Small classes create a learning environment geared to individual success. Students gain professional skills serving clients in the onsite salon clinic. Job placement assistance is available along with networking opportunities at fashion events and expos.

Our policy for entering the program: (Subject to change)
1) Everyone must attend Open House. Open House occurs at least one per week if not twice.
2) Open House program includes program information, including costs and financial assistance and applicants will take an assessment of reading and math (TABE).

Cosmetology Program Qualifications

Applicants must be 17 years of age or older.

Applicants must possess or be working on a U.S secondary credential:

Applicants (17 and older) must hold a U.S. or U.S. recognized High School, Equivalency or TASC (formerly GED) diploma OR

Applicants who are 21 years of age or older must be working towards a equivalency diploma:

Applicants (17 and older) must hold a U.S. or U.S. recognized High School, Equivalency or TASC (formerly GED) diploma.

Applicants (21 and older) must be currently enrolled in Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division High School Equivalency program and stay enrolled until program completion.

International applicants who possess a foreign secondary credential must have foreign credential evaluated by an accredited transcript evaluation service or enroll in Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division HSE program. Visit www.naces.org for more information on evaluation.

Applicants must take TABE assessment, and if qualified, attend Registration and Orientation to enroll.

TABE assessment score requirements for Nurse Aide program: 9th grade Reading and Total Math on a D Level TABE. Free literacy and math classes are available for applicants who need academic assistance.

TRANSFER STUDENTS: Hours from other schools may be accepted. A special cosmetology program may be designed to meet your needs based on accepted hours.
Cosmetology Program Breakdown

Program is 1040 hours: 1000 hours of instruction plus 40-hour unpaid internship. An additional 10% (104-hour) attendance buffer is added to student calendar

Typically, new students enroll the first Monday of the month.

Enrollment may be alternated monthly depending on enrollment and is subject to change.

Full-time class meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Full-time program length is about one (1) year.

Part-time class meets Mondays, 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Part-time program length is about fourteen (14) months.
Cost of Program:
Program costs are currently based on student and community needs. Currently, Buffalo School of Cosmetology does not offer Federal Student Aid but has established for a limited time only, an in-house tuition assistance program. Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division offers cosmetology on a sliding scale based on applicant’s income and the Division’s eligibility of grant funding. Program costs are subject to change as needed
Cosmetology - $6500 (1040 hour program)

A non-refundable down payment of $100 is due prior to the start of the program to hold enrollment. Money order, bank or cashier's check or credit/debit card payment only for $100 down payment. Personal checks are not accepted.

Prior to enrollment a $358.88 payment to Burmax is due for student cosmetology kit. Payment to Burmax must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check (may take longer to process) or credit/debit card. Cosmetology kits arrive within 7 to 10 business days from payment. Personal checks are not accepted. Cosmetology kits are non-refundable.

Prior to enrollment a $182.88 payment to Burmax is due for student textbook and workbook. Payment to Burmax must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check (may take longer to process) or credit/debit card. Cosmetology kits arrive within 7 to 10 business days from payment. Personal checks are not accepted. Textbooks and workbooks are non-refundable.

Tuition does not include state mandated physical or state licensing and testing fees. The money order to cover state licensing and testing fees, if provided, is fully refundable upon termination.

Buffalo School of Cosmetology will provide a tuition schedule to assist students in making monthly payments in a timely manner. Monthly payments are due by the end of the third week of the month or the student will be removed from the roster. Monthly payments must be in the form of money order, bank or cashier’s check or credit card. Personal checks are not accepted.

Tuition includes student textbook, cosmetology kit, manikin, and smock or barber jacket. Kit, textbook, manikin and uniform, upon payment of $641.76 ($100 + $358.88 kit +$182.88 textbook & workbook) down payment, are non-refundable/non-returnable.

Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division does not have additional or hidden fees to programs.
Academic and Program Requirements
Eligibility for graduation requires that students meet the following criteria:

Completion of all 1040 program hours and assignments, including term papers, study guides, projects, and exams and quizzes.

Maintain satisfactory academic progress (75% or higher GPA).

Maintain satisfactory attendance as outlined under the attendance policy (90% or higher).

Successfully complete hands-on practical experiences, internships, or alternative work experiences.

Satisfy all financial obligations to BPS Adult Education Division.
Information Technology Requirement

All students have access to division computers to complete coursework, resumes and cover letters, career exploration and as needed for program and career requirements.

Computers must be used in accordance with Buffalo Board of Education IT guidelines.

There are no additional fees for use of the Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division’s information technology.

Refund Policy:
Tuition refunds will be made only under the following circumstances:

BPS Adult Education Division reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. If tuition and fees are collected in advance to the start date of the program and BPS Adult Education cancels the class, 100% of tuition and fees will be refunded.

Appropriate refunds for a student who does not begin classes shall be made within 45 days of the class start date.

A full refund will be made for withdrawal of those not satisfied only prior to the second week of classes.
-
A prorated refund will be given the second week of classes through mid-point.

Midpoint to end of program will receive no refund.

Upon termination of enrollment, any balance due to BPS Adult Education Division, based on the school's refund policy, is payable immediately. All charges on the student's account must be paid in full prior to the completion of the training program.
BPS Adult Education Division will not reimburse students for a refund under $5.00 or less.
Outstanding Balances
Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division reserves the right to withhold student transcripts and deny approval for State Board Examinations to any student who has an outstanding tuition balance within their program.
Cosmetology Transfer Policy:
The only program that admits transfer students is Cosmetology.

The applicant must provide official transcripts showing the school(s) attended and the hours completed.

The applicant must take a paper assessment and a hands-on assessment of their cosmetology skills. The written and hands-on assessments comprise curriculum and skills from the New York State Written and Practical Examinations. The Vocational Supervisor and Coordinator will calculate the number of transfer hours to be accepted into the Buffalo School of Cosmetology based on the results of the assessments.

A placement timeline will be created to identify a start date if the student’s current hours have not exceeded a period of two years. A student will not be given credit for more than 800 completed cosmetology hours. In order to be eligible for tuition assistance, transfer students must contract for at least 600 cosmetology hours. Any transfer student attending less than 600 hours will be charged $6.50 per hour including 40-hour internship.
